ARTICLE -NEW LIMITED HEART DISEASE CLAIMS FOR B VITAMINS APPROVED BY THE FDAThe FDA recently announced that it will allow limited heart disease claims for foods and dietary supplements that contain B vitamins: An example of an acceptable claim provided by the FDA is "Studies in the general population have generally found that foods and dietary supplements containing vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid lower homocysteine, an amino acid found in the blood. However, the FDA did note that it is not known whether elevated levels of homocysteine may cause vascular disease or whether high homocysteine levels are caused by other factors." These B vitamins are found in a variety of foods. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is contained in fortified foods such as cereals and grains. Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is obtained from meat, fish and poultry, as well as fortified milk and breakfast cereals. Folate, or folic acid, which is also important in preventing birth defects, is found in many fruits, vegetables and also in fortified foods. The FDA is continuing to evaluate evidence about the effect of the vitamins on heart disease. Health Information Articles Diet, Eating, Exercise, Safety Tips, Womens Issues.
